3D Squiggler

flash-3d-squiggler

On Saturday I purchased an ‘Incredible 3D doodle Kit’ from paper chase for £4.50. The kit included some red and blue anaglyph glasses, a blue and a red pencil as well as contraption that looks similar to a drawing compass but uses the two pencils instead of having a point.

I haven’t actually used the ‘compass’ or the pencils, but I have used the glasses to create the following flash application which allows you to draw, doodle, scribble and squiggle your own 3D picture.

If you are feeling really creative you can generate a random squiggle to which you then have to work into your own picture, similar to what ‘Mr Squiggle’ had to do in his kids show.

I have just made a couple of small amends, one of which allows you to change the colour of your pencil between black and the red and blue 3D colour – Thanks to Dave Clarke for this suggestion.

… and while I am thanking people, thanks to Michelle for pointing out the ‘Incredible 3D doodle Kit’ which spawned the idea.

    Hey Trevor,

Cool program! I just made a kookaburra from the pre-made squiggle lines but the colours didn’t come out – ahh it takes me back to my Mr. Squiggle days. Anyway, there was sort of a little colour around the edges but I couldn’t really see whether it was red or blue overall. I am using firefox does that matter?

    Claire.

PS I realise that a kookaburra does not have red wings and blue eyes, I was just using some creative license!

I admit there might be a few issues with the application, but for it to work fully you need to be wearing some blue and red 3D glasses.

When you draw, red and blues lines are drawn close together and then when viewed with the glasses it gives them depth… not too many people have the glasses though :-(

One addition to the program that I am considering writing is to allow people to save and share their images. It all depends on the demand for it though, having said that I would love to see your kookaburra.

What started out as a small Sunday afternoon experiment has grown to become something more… not much more, but more all the same.

The latest update allows you to use a slider bar to select the exact depth that you want to draw at, rather than just being restricted to 3 depths.

Also, by using the arrow keys, you can adjust the depth of the line as you draw!

Thanks must go to Chris Houston for the inspiration behind these latest updates.

I’m going to get a 3d tattoo using this kind of 3d. love the program and so will my nieces.

a manual eraser would be nice and different size brushes too please.

    hello trevor
is there a simple way to create anaglyphs in flash? how do you get the multiply effekt where the red and cyan lines cross?

Hey, seriously impressive program, I have been drawing 3d pictures for hours now, but an undo button and an eraser would be awesome, it many possibilities from there on. Keep up the good work
